Gaming is inexorably intertwined with Lovecraft, cosmic horror and weird fiction, but what are the greatest Lovecraftian games of all time? What are designers and programmers still obsessed with Lovecraft? What are the most terrifying, strangest and authentic? Can you even pick a single best everone?
Well, that’s those are the perplexing questions we attempt to answer on the latest edition of The Innsmouth Book Club Episode #131 Gaming and the Mythos.
It’s always a pleasure to have a chat with old friends and fellow authors, Rob Poyton and Tim Mendees. In this episode we’re in the Squid Inn’s games room and turning our malevolent gazes on gaming: computer and videogames, board and card games, and finally, roleplaying and tabletop RPGs.

The former and latter are particular specialist subjects of mine and I’ve plenty to say on both. We have a ramble through our favourites and I’ve picked a top five Lovecraftian videogames (a really tough choice to narrow down) for you to explore.
There’s also some splendid chat on RPGs, including our biggest influences, some rampant Sandy Petersen fanboying, and the challenges of designing games in the mythos like the Achtung! Cthulhu RPG which I ran for over a decade.
We conclude with some new details and a first look at the forthcoming Mon Dieu Cthulhu TTRPG! So kick back, grab your favourite inky beverage and I hope you enjoy the episode!

The countdown continues! Don’t forget the Innsmouth Literary Festival looms large! It’s nigh on one month till this splendid day-long celebration of cosmic horror, Lovecraft and weird fiction drops. I’ll be there in person, reading, signing books new and old and launching Keeper of the Hidden Flame.
Hope to see you there!
