All Good Things… The End of Achtung! Cthulhu

So, the cat is finally out of the bag and some wistful news as Achtung! Cthulhu, the “WW2 with tentacles” RPG, I’ve written, line edited and poured a fair portion of my creative soul into for over a decade is placed in cryogenic suspension.

It’s always sad when something you’ve worked on for so long gets given the glass of whisky and a loaded service revolver, but it’s been a wild old ride and I’m hugely proud of the vast 50-odd library of books, PDF adventures, and accessories we made.

I’m also happy to go out on a real high too, The Norway Projekt is pure A!C, the classic pulp formula honed, refined and delivered in one thrilling campaign book.

Other highlights have been the Achtung! Cthulhu Starter Set, the best-selling starter set in Modiphius’s history, our annual Halloween Horrors promos, and that epic first 2d20 release of the Player’s and GM’s Guides, the Exarch edition and the screen and dice. Seeing that all sitting on a table for the first time after nearly two years work on them is something I’ll never forget.

A huge thanks to everyone at Modiphius who supported the line, especially Gavin, Haralampos and Chris Birch, there’s too many to mention them all, but they know who they are.

I’m immensely proud that we were also able to bring in a bunch of new writers, artists and nurture creative RPG talent too. Many of A!C’s alumni are already off doing amazing things elsewhere. I’m so glad we could give them a start or leg up on the way.

All things have their time, and A!C’s is up for now. My one regret is you won’t get to see the amazing living campaign we had planned, which combined a sea battle wargame with the epic globe-spanning RPG adventures of the Midgard Serpent super submarine.

But who knows, it, like A!C, may emerge, Steve Rodgers-like, to punch evil in the tentacles once again. It’s over to you now, with the World Builders programme to continue A!C’s adventures.

Make me proud.

The best thing over the years has been seeing and hearing from you, the players and fans, who have taken the game and made it their own. We always intended it to be something of a sandbox, and nothing gave me greater pleasure than hearing about the Black Sun foiled, eldritch horrors defeated or Elder Gods remaining unsummoned, during your adventures at the table.

I love how much you loved the game.

Where next? Well, if you like A!C then I’m now working on my own RPG Mon Dieu Cthulhu! and hope to have something to show later this year. It’s another battle against the menace of the Mythos set during the glory, honour and gallantry of the Napoleonic Age, where new eldritch horrors await.

But for now, it’s been an honour to serve. [Salutes with a small tear in his eye]

Hooli out…
